The driver accused of causing the Vanderbijlpark crash that killed 12 Gauteng learners is expected to appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Police have confirmed the 22-year-old faces 12 counts of culpable homicide plus charges linked to reckless and negligent driving.

What Happened in the Vanderbijlpark Crash

The collision happened on Monday during the morning school run and involved a scholar transport minibus and a truck. Twelve learners died in the crash.

Authorities have also confirmed that several pupils were injured, with three learners still in hospital receiving treatment.

Driver Arrested After Hospital Discharge

The driver was arrested after being discharged from hospital on Tuesday.

Gauteng police have said the truck driver was not injured, while a passenger travelling in the truck was hurt and taken for medical treatment.

Expired Permit and Dashcam Footage Raises Questions

At a media briefing, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the scholar transport vehicle was operating with an expired professional driving permit (PDP) that lapsed in November last year.

Dashcam footage that has circulated online appears to show the minibus in the oncoming lane moments before the impact, with both vehicles swerving shortly before the crash.

Calls for Tougher Learner Transport Enforcement

The tragedy has reignited concerns about scholar transport safety, especially around compliance, driver accountability and enforcement on busy commuter routes. Officials are continuing to take statements and investigate the full circumstances of the collision, with more details expected as the court process unfolds.
