ActionSA president Herman Mashaba announced MP Dereleen James as the party’s new Western Cape provincial chairperson on Saturday. The appointment came during a media briefing in Johannesburg after the party’s three-day Senate strategic planning meeting.
James, widely known as a parliamentary firebrand for her work on crime and governance issues, now leads ActionSA’s efforts in the Western Cape as the party prepares for the 2026 local government elections.
Mashaba Taps James to Lead Western Cape Efforts
Mashaba described James as someone who has never backed down from the fight to restore safety and dignity where it has been lost. He made the announcement at the Johannesburg briefing on 28 March 2026.
James welcomed the role with clear enthusiasm. “I am up for the challenge,” she said.
She also shared her personal relief:
“Finally I get to smile after months of being angry.”
James Brings Strong Parliamentary Record to New Role
As an ActionSA Member of Parliament, James has played an active part in oversight work, particularly on the Ad Hoc Committee investigating serious allegations within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
On the sidelines of the committee hearings, she reacted to testimonies that included evidence from Lieutenant-General Francinah Vuma, who retired in January 2026 after submitting a protected disclosure to President Cyril Ramaphosa. James said the accounts confirmed long-standing concerns about political interference and the state of security institutions.
Focus Shifts to Reforms and Policy Changes
James stressed that the committee must now move to its final report. She told reporters the hearings amplified what many already knew about challenges at police stations and why communities feel underserved.
She noted that while many South Africans expect arrests, the committee’s task centres on strengthening policies across state institutions rather than carrying out prosecutions. The hearings are expected to conclude soon.
