Tensions flared outside the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday when two groups arrived with competing messages: support for 11 Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) officers facing murder-related charges and support for slain alleged Clever Kidz member Wade Price. The groups stood behind crime scene tape under heavy security and traded chants, including “Justice for AGU” and “Justice for Wade”.

Inside court, the 11 accused reportedly wore personalised shirts with “#AGU11” printed on them as the matter continued.

What the Officers are Accused of

The officers face charges linked to Price’s death, including kidnapping, torture, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, attempting to defeat the administration of justice and murder. The alleged murder happened on 4 December 2025 and followed an interrogation linked to a shooting incident outside the same court the day before.

The court previously heard that Price and three friends were taken to Manenberg SAPS and CCTV footage allegedly shows them entering with the accused officers. The three friends were later released, while Price was allegedly taken to a property in Vygekraal Road where he was killed.

Case Delays and What Happens Next

Proceedings were disrupted on Thursday due to the absence of the State prosecutor, even though the court was expected to receive updates on the investigation.

The defence said it intends to appeal the bail decision in the Western Cape High Court on Friday. Defence lawyer Bruce Hendricks argued that the magistrate “misdirected himself” and said the investigation was described in court as being at an early stage.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the investigation is not complete and key reports are still outstanding, including DNA results, crime scene findings and the post-mortem report. The main case was postponed to 5 March.

Bail Fallout and Magistrate Complaint

Only accused number nine was granted bail due to health challenges, while the rest remain in custody. Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping said nine officers will be held at Brandvlei Correctional Facility and the female officer at Worcester Prison.

A formal complaint was also lodged against Athlone magistrate Nathan Johnson after the bail outcome, with calls for the magistrate’s recusal.
