The Western Cape Education Department will continue disciplinary proceedings against a Bellville South High School learner accused of killing a fellow pupil.

This comes amid unconfirmed reports that the learner may have fled South Africa following the deadly incident.

The department said it could not confirm whether the accused learner had left the country. It also declined to disclose his immigration status or confirm claims that he was undocumented.

The learner was suspended after the victim’s death and the school’s disciplinary process has already started.

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said the hearing would resume when schools reopen.

She said the school could continue with the hearing even if the learner did not attend, provided that the notice was properly served and all required procedures were followed.

Grade 10 Learner Died in Hospital

The accused learner allegedly attacked a Grade 10 pupil at Bellville South High School on 11 June 2026.

The victim was reportedly struck on the head with a broom during an alleged dispute involving a stolen cellphone.

He later died in hospital from his injuries.

The incident sparked a murder investigation and raised further concerns about violence at schools in the Western Cape.

No arrests have been made in connection with the killing.

Police Investigation Remains Open

Western Cape police previously confirmed that a murder case had been registered for investigation.

Police have not confirmed reports that the suspect may have left South Africa.

Spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the case remained under investigation when questioned about the claims.

The education department also stressed that it was unable to verify whether the learner had left the country.

The disciplinary matter and the criminal investigation are separate processes. The school may continue its internal proceedings while police investigate the learner’s alleged involvement in the death.

The case is expected to return to the school’s disciplinary process after the school holidays. Authorities have not provided further information on the learner’s current whereabouts or whether investigators are actively seeking him.
