Cape Town’s 2026 World Naked Bike Ride has been cancelled after organisers faced growing pressure and new conditions from the City of Cape Town. The annual event is usually staged the day before the Cape Town Cycle Tour and has been running in the city since 2008.
According to event coordinator Marthinus Pretorius, the biggest sticking point this year was a requirement that participants be fully clothed. That condition effectively shut the door on the event in its usual form.
Organisers say Tensions Have Been Building
Pretorius said this year’s ride was hit by uncertainty, pressure and what he described as hostility towards the naturist community in Cape Town. He said the trouble started after last year’s event, when the City raised concerns linked to sections 9 and 22 of the Sexual Offences Act of 2007. Even though the 2025 ride still went ahead, this year’s event did not.
He also said organisers struggled to get clear answers from the City during the planning process. In previous years, he said, the group would notify the City of the protest and then meet officials under the Public Gatherings Act before getting the go-ahead.
More Than a Bike Ride
The World Naked Bike Ride is part of an international movement held in 74 cities. The campaign pushes for renewable energy, less reliance on fossil fuels, body positivity and better protection for vulnerable road users. In Cape Town, the event had become a familiar and controversial fixture on the cycling calendar.
Pretorius also linked the issue to broader concerns affecting the naturist community. He said police had recently told people at Sandy Bay to cover up, despite the beach being described in the report as an unofficial secluded nudist beach since 1996. Organisers have since lodged a complaint with the Commission for Language, Religious and Cultural Rights.
A Long-Running Tradition Comes to a Stop
The cancellation brings an abrupt halt to an event that had lasted 18 years in Cape Town. It also shows how tensions around public decency, protest rights and body freedom are now colliding more directly in the city. For now, the 2026 ride is off.
