A mass shooting at a shebeen in Cape Town’s Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East has left eight people dead, with three others injured. Police are now hunting suspects as detectives work to pin down a motive that may be linked to extortion in the area.
What Happened in Marikana, Philippi East
The shooting happened in the early hours of Saturday, 17 January 2026, at a shebeen in the settlement. Police said six people were declared dead at the scene. A seventh person died while being taken to hospital, and an eighth victim later died in hospital.
Western Cape police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile said a woman, believed to be the owner of the shebeen, was among those shot.
Police Focus on Extortion Links
Investigators believe the attack may be connected to extortion syndicates operating in the area. Patekile said the motive is believed to be extortion, and urged residents to report threats and demands for “protection” money so police can act before violence escalates.
Suspects Still at Large
Police spokesperson Col André Traut said the suspects fled the scene and had not been arrested. He called on anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app anonymously.
Police said they are looking for at least three suspects, and officials have indicated more than three people may have been involved.
