Cape Town is serving up a busy weekend, with everything from giant kites and international sport to design exhibitions, live entertainment and community events on the calendar.

If you are still deciding what to do from Friday, 23 October to Sunday, 25 October, here are some of the standout events happening across the city.

Watch Cape Town’s Skies Fill With Colour

The Cape Town International Kite Festival returns to Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery on Saturday and Sunday.

Hosted by Cape Mental Health, the festival will feature giant kites from local and international flyers, kite-making workshops, family entertainment, food vendors and a children’s amusement area.

The festival runs from 10 am to 6 pm on both days. Cape Mental Health says proceeds help support its free mental health services in the Western Cape.

Dive Into Cape Town’s Design Scene

Design Week South Africa continues across Cape Town until Sunday, with exhibitions, talks, workshops and studio visits.

One highlight is the UNBUILT exhibition at 71 Shortmarket Street, which explores ideas for making South African public spaces more inclusive and people-focused. It runs until Sunday.

On Saturday, visitors can also join a half-day Design Safari through three Cape Town artist studios. Tickets are R450 and booking is essential.

Catch International Sporting Action

The IBF World Championship gets underway at the Bellville Velodrome on Friday and runs until 1 November.

Cape Town Tourism says blackball players and delegations from 16 countries are taking part in the international tournament.

Sports fans can also catch the Springbok Women against Ireland at Athlone Stadium on Saturday as part of the WXV Global Series, according to Time Out Cape Town.

Take Over the Streets of Langa

On Sunday, Open Streets Langa will turn parts of King Langalibalele Drive and Lerotholi Avenue into car-free public spaces.

Running from noon to 5 pm, the programme includes music, cycling, walking, games, community activities and local businesses.

The event forms part of Design Week South Africa and is open to people arriving on foot, bicycle, skateboard, wheelchair or with a pram.

Make a Weekend of It

Other options include Nataniël in concert in Bloubergstrand, an Oktoberfest celebration at Killarney International Raceway and a Friday evening paint fundraiser for the Khaltsha Cycling Academy.

With family outings, sport, culture and creative events spread across the city, Cape Town has plenty on offer this weekend.
