Cape Winelands Airport has appointed Boogertman + Partners as lead architects for its planned redevelopment, in a move that marks another step forward for the major Western Cape infrastructure project. According to Cape Town ETC, the firm will oversee the airport’s architectural vision and design integration.
Design Team Locked in
Boogertman + Partners will work with Berlin-based airport development company amd.sigma on the project. Cape Town ETC reported that the partnership brings together international airport planning expertise and local architectural knowledge as work continues on the Cape Winelands Airport Development.
RSA Aero managing director Nicholas Ferguson said the appointment fits the scale of the project, describing Boogertman + Partners as an ideal match because of its record in award-winning architecture and its focus on connecting infrastructure with human experience.
Big Plans for the Airport Site
The development is planned as an airport city precinct aimed at boosting economic growth, drawing investment and improving regional connectivity. Long-term plans include a new boutique terminal, runway infrastructure, upgraded airside systems, expanded cargo and logistics facilities and a modernised general aviation precinct.
Cape Town ETC reported that the project carries an expected initial investment of about R8 billion to R10 billion. That spend is expected to deliver terminal buildings, the runway and a 450-hectare developable estate.
Jobs and Green Targets in Focus
The airport is expected to support around 35,000 direct and indirect jobs, with just over 100,000 direct and indirect jobs potentially sustained over its first 20 years of operation. Those figures place the project among the bigger long-term economic development plays in the region.
Boogertman + Partners director André Wright said the team aims to create a world-class facility with human-centred, socially impactful and environmentally responsible design. Director Wessel van Dyk added that the airport’s visual identity will be rooted in the Cape Winelands and that the project is targeting top environmental standards and ratings.
Another Milestone for Cape Winelands Airport
It is reported that the architectural concept blends with the region’s natural landscape and agricultural character, with a sculptural glass-and-steel terminal envisioned as part of a phased development model. The latest appointment follows earlier strategic partnership announcements involving Growthpoint Properties and WBHO Construction at the end of 2025.
