Cape Winelands Airport is moving closer to construction, with plans to transform Fisantekraal Airfield near Durbanville into a new international airport serving the Western Cape.
The estimated R8-billion first phase will introduce a new passenger terminal, a longer runway and supporting aviation infrastructure. The project has cleared a major environmental hurdle, although work remains before construction can begin.
From Fisantekraal to an International Airport
The existing airfield dates back to 1943 and has primarily served general aviation. Its planned transformation would introduce scheduled domestic and international services, alongside cargo operations and other aviation activities.
The proposed development covers approximately 450 hectares, with facilities planned to include:
- A runway approximately 3.5 kilometres long, designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
- A new passenger terminal with modern check-in, baggage-handling and security facilities.
- Aircraft parking stands, hangars and fuelling infrastructure.
- Dedicated air-cargo facilities.
- Commercial, logistics and hospitality developments surrounding the airport.
Architectural concepts released by Boogertman + Partners in 2026 provide an early look at the proposed terminal, with a design that draws on the surrounding landscape.
Construction Moves Closer
The Western Cape Government granted environmental authorisation in October 2025. Following six appeals, one of which was withdrawn, the remaining five were dismissed in 2026.
Growthpoint Properties has joined the project as a development and management partner for the airport precinct, while WBHO has been appointed as the main contractor.
The airport has also received Strategic Integrated Project status, intended to help coordinate outstanding government approvals and authorisations, however, the designation does not mean every requirement has been completed.
Construction was targeted to begin towards the end of 2026 or early 2027, subject to the remaining preparatory processes. The first phase is expected to be commissioned in 2028, although this remains a target rather than a confirmed opening date.
Complementing Cape Town International
Cape Winelands Airport is intended to complement Cape Town International Airport by providing additional capacity for passenger services, cargo and general aviation. Its proposed cargo and logistics facilities could attract businesses requiring access to air transport, while commercial and hospitality developments are planned for the surrounding site.
The airport’s eventual route network, airline operators and passenger numbers have yet to be established. These will depend on market demand, operating approvals and commercial agreements with airlines.
Focus remains on moving from planning to physical construction.
Environmental appeals have been resolved and development partners are in place, but the next major milestone will be the start of construction on the airport.
