South African-born actress Charlize Theron has spoken about the night her mother, Gerda Maritz, shot and killed her father, Charles Theron. In a recent interview with journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Theron described the incident as a traumatic turning point from her teenage years. She said she was 15 at the time.
Fear Built Before the Shooting
According to Theron, the violence began after her father became angry over what she described as a small mistake she had made. She said she sensed that something had shifted and told her mother that they should separate from him. Theron also said her father had been under the influence that night.
She recalled asking her mother to tell him she was asleep when he came home. But the situation escalated fast. Theron said her father broke into the house and fired through the steel doors while threatening to kill them. She described the message from him as clear and immediate.
Mother and Daughter Fought to Survive
Theron said her mother ran to the safe to get her gun as her father forced his way in. She said the two of them used their bodies to hold the bedroom door shut while he fired through it. The actress later said her mother followed him as he moved to the safe to get more weapons. That is when she shot him.
Theron has framed the shooting as an act of survival, not revenge. She said plainly that her father was going to kill them. She also noted that this kind of domestic violence is not rare and remains a reality in many homes.
No Charges Were Filed
No charges were filed against Gerda Maritz because the shooting was treated as self-defence. Theron’s latest comments have again put the spotlight on the lasting trauma caused by domestic violence and the desperate choices some families are forced to make in life-threatening situations.
