Chery is preparing to introduce its Q electric hatchback to the South African market in September 2026.

With an expected starting price of around R350 000, the model aims to make electric mobility more accessible to local buyers.

The compact five-door hatchback will enter a growing segment that includes rivals like the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf.

According to Chery, the Q is designed to offer a balance between affordability, practicality and everyday usability for urban drivers.

Range and performance details

Powering the Chery Q is a 42.7kWh battery linked to a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 90kW and 115Nm.

The hatchback is expected to reach 100km/h from a standstill in just over nine seconds.

Chery states that the vehicle can travel up to 400km on a single charge under NEDC testing conditions.

However, under the more realistic WLTP cycle, the estimated range drops to around 340km.

The rear-wheel-drive setup places the motor at the back, which can influence handling and weight distribution.

Designed for everyday practicality

In terms of size, the Q measures just over 4.1 metres in length and offers a wheelbase of 2.7 metres.

Boot space stands at 375 litres, expanding significantly when the rear seats are folded down.

There is also a small storage compartment under the bonnet for added convenience.

Styling highlights include distinctive LED lighting, flush-style door handles and a modern floating roof design.

Wheel sizes will vary between 16-inch and 17-inch options depending on the model variant.

Reservations already open

Local buyers can already secure a Chery Q with a R5 000 deposit, which will go towards the final purchase price.

Early customers may also qualify for launch incentives such as home charging solutions or financial contributions.
