Christiane Zorn has begun her tenure as chairperson and managing director of Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA), succeeding Martina Biene. Volkswagen confirmed the leadership change would take effect on 1 October 2026.
Reflecting on her first official week, Zorn described herself as VWGA’s 14th managing director. She said expanding Volkswagen’s presence across Africa would involve employees, dealers, suppliers, industry partners, government stakeholders and customers.
Her arrival follows Volkswagen’s recent celebrations marking 75 years in South Africa. Zorn attended the anniversary gala alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa and more than 200 guests.
She also joined an employee celebration the following day, where she said the workforce’s energy, pride and enthusiasm stood out.
Tengo production comes into focus
Zorn has already attended the Tengo Launch Day as Volkswagen prepares to manufacture its third model at Plant Kariega.
The company previously announced a R4-billion investment in 2024 to support production of the Tengo. Volkswagen said the model was unveiled during its South African anniversary celebrations.
During her opening week, Zorn also spent time learning about the sales business and the four brands within Volkswagen Group Africa.
She met industry stakeholders to strengthen relationships supporting the local automotive sector’s growth and sustainability. Conversations with employees across the business helped her understand their responsibilities and contributions.
Getting to know South Africa
Zorn’s introduction to the country extends beyond the boardroom and factory floor.
She said she hopes to explore destinations ranging from the Wild Coast and Cape to rural Limpopo, while learning more about South Africa’s cultures.
Her list also includes attending a Soweto Derby, learning about rugby and trying a Gatsby, bunny chow and kota.
She joked about learning the difference between “now”, “just now” and “now now”, alongside mastering the pronunciation of Kariega.
A handover and a new chapter
Zorn thanked Biene for a collaborative transition and wished her well at Škoda Auto, where she takes responsibility for sales and marketing.
She also thanked VWGA employees for their welcome, saying she intends to meet as many colleagues as possible before the summer holiday break.
