COSATU has called on government to halt a planned R372 million Defence Force Day parade and related activities. The event is scheduled for 21 February 2026 in Thohoyandou.
The federation says the price tag cannot be justified while the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is under strain and facing serious operational pressure.
‘This Money Should go to Soldiers’
COSATU argues the funding should be redirected to urgent day-to-day needs inside the SANDF. It says soldiers have raised concerns about deteriorating living conditions, including barracks in poor shape, broken toilets and worn-out uniforms.
The federation also claims some members have been affected by cost-cutting to the point where meals have been reduced.
DRC Deployment Concerns add to the Anger
COSATU has linked its criticism to the wider state of the military, including the risks faced by peacekeeping troops deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It says government should not prioritise a high-cost parade while troops are dealing with dangerous conditions and questions remain about adequate support and equipment.
COSATU spokesperson Matthew Parks has also raised claims about peacekeeping allowances, saying soldiers did not receive the full benefit of what was intended for them.
Call to Ramaphosa and Motshekga
COSATU has urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to instruct Defence Minister Angie Motshekga and the SANDF to scrap the event.
The federation says the R372 million Defence Force Day budget should instead go towards basics that directly improve readiness and dignity, including proper meals, safe accommodation, training time and working aircraft, ships and vehicles.
