South Africa could see changes inside the Government of National Unity after the Democratic Alliance said it will review the performance of its representatives in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet. The move was announced by newly elected DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis on Monday, 14 April 2026.
The DA joined the GNU in 2024 after the ANC lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid. Since then, the party has held six Cabinet posts and six deputy minister positions.
Hill-Lewis made it clear that holding office should depend on performance. He said no one is automatically entitled to a position and that leadership roles must be earned. While the president has the final say on executive appointments, Ramaphosa has generally accepted nominees from leaders of parties in the coalition.
Hill-Lewis Still Weighing Next Steps
Hill-Lewis is due to meet Ramaphosa on Tuesday, 15 April 2026, but said he has not yet decided whether any DA ministers or deputies should be replaced. That leaves the door open for a reshuffle, but no names have been confirmed.
The announcement comes at a key moment for the DA. Hill-Lewis acknowledged the party still has work to do to win broader support from Black voters as it tries to grow beyond its traditional base. In the 2024 national election, the DA won 22% of the vote while the ANC secured 40%.
He said the party should not blame voters for failing to connect with its message. Instead, he said the DA must look inward and confront the trust gap that still exists.
