Five people have died in a devastating crash involving a Volkswagen Polo and a bus on the N6 in the Eastern Cape.

The crash involved a bus carrying 66 Zimbabwean nationals and a white Volkswagen Polo carrying five occupants.

The bus was reportedly travelling between KuGompo City, formerly East London, and Stutterheim at the time of the crash. 

The VW Polo became trapped underneath the bus, and the jaws of life were used to pull the deceased from it.

According to reports, one bus passenger did sustain serious injuries. Various other bus passengers have been hospitalised for other injuries.



Investigations are underway

Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the collision, but transport officials have said that the circumstances of the crash are being investigated.

Cases of culpable homicide and reckless driving have been opened at the Stutterheim police station.

The Transport Department has conveyed its condolences to the families of the deceased and any injured passengers.
