Gauteng police have confirmed the fourth suspect in the e-hailing driver murder of Isaac David Satlat surrendered to officers on Monday.
Colonel Mavela Masondo, police spokesperson, said the man handed himself over in Atteridgeville. He will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today, Tuesday 17 February.
Like the other three suspects, he faces charges of premeditated murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The e-hailing driver murder took place on Wednesday 11 February when Satlat, a 22-year-old Nigerian national and Bolt driver, picked up passengers in Pretoria West. Dashcam footage from his Suzuki Ertiga captured the attack and went viral on social media.
Three Co-Accused Abandon Bail as Protesters Demand Justice
Dikeledi Tears Mphela (24), Goitsione Machidi (25) and McClaren Mushwana (30) appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday 16 February. They abandoned their bid for bail and will remain in custody.
The matter was postponed to 23 February for further investigations. All three are represented by Legal Aid.
Hundreds of protesters, including members of the Nigerian Union and e-hailing driver associations, gathered outside the court demanding justice for Satlat.
Family Appeals for Repatriation Funds
Satlat’s family described the e-hailing driver murder as a criminal act, not xenophobia.
Family spokesperson Otila Onoja appealed for public donations to repatriate the 22-year-old engineering student’s body to Nigeria. “We need funds to take him back home so that he can be laid to rest in his hometown,” Onoja said.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa earlier conveyed their condolences and called on law enforcement to ensure those responsible face the full might of the law.
