A Gauteng traffic official accused of raping a woman in the same apartment block where they lived has been released on R3,000 bail.

The 36-year-old officer appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning. He may not be named until he has pleaded.

According to the report, the case involves a 26-year-old woman and an alleged incident at an apartment building in Arcadia, Pretoria.

Alleged Attack Happened in April

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the alleged rape happened on 13 April 2026.

She said the accused allegedly met the complainant in the early hours of the morning on the fourth-floor staircase of their apartment building. The two allegedly smoked together before the accused persuaded her not to return to her apartment.

Mahanjana said he allegedly asked her to go with him to the top floor of the building to continue their conversation.

The State alleges that an altercation then broke out between them.

Woman Allegedly Tried to Escape

Mahanjana said the accused allegedly pinned the woman against a wall and sexually assaulted her.

The woman allegedly pushed him away, causing him to fall down several stairs.

According to the State, she then tried to run away. The accused allegedly got up, grabbed her, pinned her against a wall and raped her.

After the alleged attack, the woman reportedly ran back to her apartment and locked the door.

Case Postponed for Further Investigation

The matter was reported to police on 23 April 2026. The traffic official was arrested the next day at his residence.

During bail proceedings, the State did not oppose bail. Mahanjana said the accused was not considered a flight risk.

The court granted him bail of R3,000. The case was postponed to 15 July 2026 for further investigations.

The allegations remain before the court and the accused has not yet pleaded.
