The Gautrain has entered a major transition after its original concession agreement officially came to an end on Friday, 27 March 2026. Gautrain confirmed that the 19-and-a-half-year concession with the Bombela Concession Company has now concluded, closing what it described as a key chapter in one of South Africa’s biggest public-private partnership projects.
Gautrain Services Will Continue
Commuters will not see an immediate change to daily operations. Gautrain said services will continue without interruption, with the Bombela Operating Company staying on under a contractual holdover arrangement for up to six months from Saturday, 28 March 2026. The agency said this temporary setup is meant to give officials time to complete final negotiations with the preferred bidder for the next concession.
According to Gautrain, the next operator will be responsible for operating, maintaining, refurbishing, upgrading and modernising the rail system over the next 15 years. Gautrain CEO Tshepo Kgobe said the focus during this transition is to keep service stable while preparing for a smooth handover to the next concessionaire.
Gautrain Highlights Economic Impact
Gautrain said the system has added R46 billion in economic value to Gauteng since launching in 2010. It also claimed that every rand invested returns R1.72 to the province. According to the agency, around 245,000 jobs have been created through property development near Gautrain stations, while about 59% of major office development in Gauteng now clusters around Gautrain nodes.
These figures were used by Gautrain to argue that reliable, high-frequency rail has directly shaped investment decisions and property growth in the province.
New Routes and Stations Planned
The next phase is not only about operations. It also includes expansion. Gauteng’s provincial government has already gazetted new routes and stations to extend the network. One of the biggest projects is a 17.4km link to Lanseria Airport, which will include elevated viaducts and a station north of the airport parking area.
New stations listed in the latest gazette include Jabulani, Roodepoort, Lanseria, Cradle, Smart City, Samrand, Fourways, Sunninghill and Olievenhoutbosch. The route determination for the Soweto Extension and Cosmo City Junction has also been finalised. Gauteng plans a 19.9km underground section between Little Falls and Jabulani, aimed at linking Soweto more directly into the broader Gautrain network.
