ActionSA says ministers in the Government of National Unity (GNU) have racked up nearly R450 million in travel and accommodation costs in their first 18 months in office, with the total expected to rise once outstanding parliamentary replies are finalized.
What ActionSA is Claiming
The party says it compiled the figures using its GNU Performance Tracker and written replies to parliamentary questions. ActionSA argues the spending shows “executive indulgence” at a time when millions of South Africans are unemployed and public services are under strain.
The Biggest Spenders so Far
ActionSA’s breakdown places Human Settlements at the top with R32.98 million, followed by Water and Sanitation on R29.57 million. It also lists Women, Youth and People with Disabilities at R25.27 million, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment at R24.41 million, and the Presidency at R24.17 million over the same 18-month period.
Examples That Raised Eyebrows
ActionSA highlights trips it says look wildly out of proportion to their length and value. In its statement, it points to spending linked to Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau, including R2.12 million for three nights in New York in September 2024 and R1.5 million for a one-week trip to Washington, DC. It also flags Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi’s travel costs, including R2.75 million for a seven-night New York visit.
What ActionSA Wants to do Next
ActionSA says the total could climb beyond R500 million as more replies come in. It says it has introduced an Enhanced Cut Cabinet Perks Bill to rein in ministerial perks, and it is also pushing a constitutional amendment proposal to abolish deputy minister positions.
