The Hawks arrested six suspects in Johannesburg during a coordinated raid targeting an alleged transnational investment fraud operation. Investigators also found 25 call centre agents at the premises, bringing the total number of people detained in the operation to more than 30.

The takedown involved local and international partners, including Interpol, as well as financial sector support through banks and banking risk structures. The arrests formed part of Interpol’s Operation Jackal, focused on online scams and cross-border financial crime.

How the Alleged Investment Scam Worked

Investigators say the syndicate promoted bogus investment opportunities on social media, targeting people close to retirement age who had substantial savings. Victims were reportedly pulled in with small initial deposits that appeared to generate strong returns.

After that first “win”, call centre agents allegedly kept up contact through online platforms including Skype, Messenger, Zoom and WhatsApp, pushing victims to invest larger sums. Authorities describe the setup as a classic “boiler room” style operation built to pressure and persuade.

Victims Abroad and Shifting Bases in SA

The investigation began after statements were taken from 43 victims in Australia, with additional victims reportedly identified in countries including the UK, the US, Canada and New Zealand. Authorities allege the group operated from both Gauteng and the Western Cape.

To stay hidden, investigators say the suspects regularly changed locations every three to six months, while also registering multiple companies to lease premises and run banking facilities. They allegedly used polished branding, professional websites and fabricated marketing material to look legit.

What Happens Next

Those arrested face charges linked to contraventions of the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, with investigations continuing and more charges still possible. The suspects are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday, 28 January 2026.
