A South African Police Service (SAPS) sergeant from the Eastern Cape has been rewarded with a brand-new car after stepping in during a violent domestic incident that put a mother and child at risk.
Domestic Call Turns Into Hostage Drama
Sgt Masibulele Qinisile, 41, is a visible policing member attached to Cacadu Police Station in the Chris Hani District. He responded to a domestic violence complaint that escalated into a hostage situation involving a firearm.
SAPS spokesperson Lt-Col Amanda van Wyk said the suspect held his family hostage, including his wife and child. During the confrontation, one police member was disarmed and the suspect opened fire. Qinisile then engaged the suspect single-handedly.
According to details shared about the incident, Qinisile’s actions helped neutralise the threat and ensured the suspect’s wife, child and the police crew made it out safely.
‘Courage Under Fire’ Earns Top Honours
Qinisile’s bravery was recognised at the SAPS National Excellence Awards in Bloemfontein, where he was named the Laureate Award winner and also received the National Commissioner’s Award.
The recognition came with a major personal milestone. Qinisile walked away with a brand-new vehicle, officially becoming a first-time car owner. He also received an additional prize, a four-night cruise on a luxury ship to Pomene in Mozambique.
Awards Spotlight on Service Excellence
SAPS said more than 350 top performers were honoured at the 11th edition of the awards, held under the theme “Serving with integrity, celebrating excellence”.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, alongside National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and other senior leaders, attended the event. In his address, Cachalia congratulated winners and nominees and encouraged them to keep setting the standard through consistent conduct and service.
