Day visitors will be allowed back into parts of the Kruger National Park from Monday, January 19 after severe flooding linked to heavy rainfall in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. SANParks says access is being restored in phases after officials assessed damage across the park.
Limited Access
SANParks says the southern region will be accessible via Paul Kruger Gate, Numbi Gate, Malelane Gate and Phabeni Gate. Phabeni Gate is being closely monitored because water levels in a nearby stream can rise quickly and it may close at short notice if conditions change. Crocodile Bridge Gate remains closed until further notice.
Northern Section Still Off Limits After Flood Damage
While parts of the park are reopening, SANParks says the northern section remains inaccessible because roads and bridges were washed away or badly damaged. These areas will stay closed until repairs are done and it is safe to reopen.
Safety Warnings
Visitors have been urged to drive cautiously and avoid gravel roads, which may still be unsafe after water damage. SANParks has also warned that shops inside the park are low on stock due to earlier access challenges so visitors should bring essential supplies to avoid getting stuck without basics. The South African Weather Service has also issued a yellow level 2 warning for parts of Limpopo, with disruptive rain and possible localised flooding still expected in some areas.
Flood Fallout Beyond the Gates
Outside the park, flooding has also hit surrounding towns. In Hoedspruit, volunteer efforts became a key part of local flood response as communities dealt with rising rivers and lingering damage.
