A lawyer was shot dead in broad daylight outside the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration offices in Johannesburg CBD, in what authorities believe may have been a targeted hit.
The shooting happened on Monday, 23 March 2026, near the corner of Fox and Joubert streets. Police have since launched a manhunt for two suspects linked to the killing.
According to reports, the victim was a legal practitioner attached to Sibanye-Stillwater’s legal team. She was reportedly handling a labour-related matter for the mining company at the time of her death.
Police Hunt Two Suspects
Gauteng police are now searching for two people believed to be connected to the shooting.
Details around the motive remain unclear. But early reports suggest investigators are treating the killing as a possible hit-style murder.
The attack has raised fresh concern about safety in the inner city and the risks faced by professionals working on high-stakes disputes.
Justice Minister Condemns Killing
Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has strongly condemned the murder.
Through her spokesperson, Terrance Manase, Kubayi said violence can never be accepted as a way of settling disputes. She stressed that South Africa’s justice system exists to provide lawful and fair processes for resolving conflict.
Kubayi also warned that attacks on legal practitioners strike at the heart of the rule of law and threaten the country’s constitutional democracy.
She called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively so those responsible can be brought to justice through due process.
Shock in Legal Circles
The killing has sent shockwaves through the legal community, especially because it happened in public and near a major dispute-resolution body.
Kubayi extended condolences to the lawyer’s family, her colleagues in the legal fraternity and everyone affected by the shooting.
With police still piecing together what happened, many questions remain unanswered. What is clear is that a woman working within South Africa’s legal system was gunned down in the middle of Johannesburg, and pressure is now mounting for fast arrests and answers.
