South African reality TV personality Mel Viljoen has returned to South Africa. She arrived quietly on Tuesday morning and deliberately kept her homecoming private.

Mel Viljoen returns to South Africa after weeks in US immigration detention. She confirmed the move to Netwerk24 on Wednesday evening and expressed relief at being home. Her husband, Peet, remains in ICE custody.

Mel Viljoen Returns Quietly After Release from US Detention

Mel Viljoen walked out of the Aurora Detention Center in Denver, Colorado, last Thursday. She carried only her phone, one set of clothes, a few thousand dollars and her bank card.

She then spent time packing before flying home from Florida via Istanbul. Her lawyer met her at the airport to ensure everything went smoothly.

“I just wanted to calibrate a little first and protect my privacy,”

she told Netwerk24. Mel Viljoen returns to South Africa feeling grateful.

“It feels like home sweet home, you know. I’m really happy to be back, actually.”

She and Peet speak regularly.

“Hey, we don’t miss America yet, you know! We don’t miss the fact that it’s the ICE detention, but it’s just not your people. It’s not people of your kind,”

she added.

Peet Viljoen stays in an ICE detention centre. The couple chose not to alert the media on Mel’s arrival because they wanted to avoid attention at the airport.

Peet told Netwerk24 they hoped he could join her by the weekend so they could address the media together. Mel knew word would spread eventually but wanted some peace first.

The couple’s troubles began on 10 March 2026. Boca Raton police in Palm Beach arrested Peet on shoplifting charges. Authorities towed their black Range Rover. After posting bail, ICE detained both because their tourist visas had expired.

Mel confronted their immigration lawyer, Russell Kerr, after he failed to file a court application to recover the vehicle despite a R50 000 payment. Kerr has since withdrawn from the case and did not respond to Netwerk24 inquiries by press time.

Reactions from the Viljoens

Mel Viljoen returns to South Africa relieved and focused on settling back in. She deliberately avoided fanfare to give herself time to adjust.

Peet remains in detention and continues to communicate with his wife. The couple has not issued further public statements beyond the exclusive Netwerk24 interview. Netwerk24 contacted Kerr but received no response.
