BMW has officially unveiled the eighth-generation 3 Series, with the new sedan set to reach South Africa in the first quarter of 2027.

BMW’s global media material confirms the new generation will be offered with both combustion and electric powertrains, while CAR Magazine reports that the local range will include the 318, 320, M350 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive.

Local pricing has not yet been announced.

New petrol models gain mild-hybrid power

BMW says the new petrol-powered 3 Series uses 48V mild-hybrid technology.

According to CAR Magazine, the 318 will use a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 115kW and 250Nm. It is claimed to reach 100km/h in 9.5 seconds.

The 320 increases output to 155kW and 330Nm and is claimed to complete the 0–100km/h sprint in 7.4 seconds.

Both models are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, while claimed fuel consumption is 6.5L/100km.

M350 xDrive tops the initial range

BMW has also confirmed the new M350 xDrive as the performance flagship of the initial combustion-engine line-up.

The manufacturer says the model uses a six-cylinder engine with 48V mild-hybrid assistance. CAR Magazine reports outputs of 326kW and 580Nm.

The M350 xDrive sends power through BMW’s all-wheel-drive system and is claimed to accelerate from 0–100km/h in 4.1 seconds.

Its top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

Electric i3 joins the 3 Series family

BMW has also confirmed the i3 50 xDrive as the first fully electric member of the 3 Series range.

Official BMW information lists the i3 50 xDrive with dual-motor all-wheel drive, producing 345kW and 645Nm.

Production of the electric model is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.

South African launch set for early 2027

CAR Magazine reports that the new 3 Series will launch locally during the first quarter of 2027.

The confirmed South African line-up is expected to include the 318, 320, M350 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive.

BMW has not yet announced South African pricing for the new-generation range.
