BMW is putting the finishing touches on its next-generation 3 Series as the combustion-powered sedan enters the final stage of development before production.

The eighth-generation model, known internally as the G50, will be sold alongside BMW’s fully electric i3. Both models share the company’s Neue Klasse design direction, although details will differ according to their powertrains.

BMW says the petrol-powered range will include four- and six-cylinder engines, all supported by 48V mild-hybrid technology.

Neue Klasse design reaches the 3 Series

The new 3 Series adopts a fresh interpretation of BMW’s familiar four-eyed front-end treatment.

Its proportions remain recognisably sporty, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and pronounced body surfaces.

BMW says the combustion 3 Series and electric i3 share the same basic design, while the cabin introduces Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X.

The new interface brings key displays and vehicle functions together in a driver-focused layout.

M350 xDrive leads the range

The performance flagship will be the M350 xDrive.

It uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, producing a combined 326kW and 580Nm.

Power is sent through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW claims the M350 xDrive can accelerate from 0–100km/h in 4.1 seconds.

Four-cylinder versions will also use 48V mild-hybrid technology.

Efficiency features include active air-flap control, an Efficiency Coach and a My Mode Efficient setting designed to reduce energy consumption.

Chassis receives major upgrades

BMW has lengthened the wheelbase and widened the front and rear tracks compared with the outgoing model.

The sedan uses a double-joint spring-strut front axle and five-link rear suspension, while steering and braking systems have also been revised.

The M350 xDrive receives additional chassis strengthening, adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential and variable sport steering as standard.

A new “Drift Moment” function is also planned for 2027, allowing the drivetrain to send engine power to the rear wheels for controlled oversteer.

Final driving tests are taking place at BMW’s facility near Miramas in southern France, following earlier cold-weather testing in Sweden and high-speed development at the Nürburgring.
