Volkswagen has launched the all-new Caravelle eHybrid in South Africa, adding plug-in hybrid power to its long-running passenger bus range.

The new model is available in a single derivative priced at R1 794 000.

Volkswagen said the Caravelle combines the practicality of its traditional bus design with improved luxury, digital technology and electrification.

Its modular cabin can be adjusted for different passenger needs, including a picnic-style seating configuration.

The price includes a three-year or 120 000km manufacturer warranty and a five-year or 100 000km maintenance plan.

The battery is covered for two years with unlimited mileage or eight years and 160 000km, depending on the applicable warranty terms.

Hybrid system produces 180kW

The Caravelle uses a 1.5-litre TSI evo2 turbocharged petrol engine producing 130kW and 250Nm.

An electric motor integrated into the six-speed DSG transmission increases total output to 180kW and 350Nm.

Volkswagen says this makes it the most powerful Caravelle yet offered in South Africa.

Power is sent to all four wheels, with the system able to direct up to 100% of the drive force to either axle when required.

The electric rear-wheel-drive system remains available even when the battery is depleted.

Up to 95km electric range

A 19.7kWh lithium-ion battery provides a claimed all-electric driving range of up to 95km.

The combined petrol and electric range is listed at up to 700km.

The battery can be fully charged using a 7.4kW home wallbox in about five and a half hours.

It also supports 11kW AC charging and up to 40kW DC fast charging.

Under suitable conditions, a 10% to 80% DC charge takes about 26 minutes.

Premium features included

Standard equipment includes 17-inch Dundrod alloy wheels, tinted rear windows and IQ.Light LED Matrix headlights.

Both sliding doors are electrically operated, while the Caravelle also receives a powered tailgate and keyless entry.

Inside, buyers get three-zone climate control, 30-colour ambient lighting and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic alert, Park Assist and a reversing camera.
