Cape Town’s iconic Newlands Cricket Ground could be headed for a name change as the Western Province Cricket Association reviews the venue’s commercial future. The move comes as the current naming rights deal with World Sports Betting nears its end, opening the door for a new sponsor.
WPCA Starts Commercial Review
The WPCA has partnered with marketing firm Megapro to reassess the commercial strategy around the stadium and its broader assets. It has also brought in global consultancy Futures Sport and Entertainment to conduct an independent valuation of those assets. The aim is to build a more structured commercial offering for the market.
WPCA chief executive Corrie van Zyl said the partnership with Megapro is a strategic step to unlock the full commercial potential of the association’s assets. He said the process is meant to deliver sponsorship solutions that benefit stakeholders and help position the Western Cape as a global sports destination.
Big Cricket Fixtures Raise the Stakes
The review comes ahead of the 2026/27 international cricket season, which is expected to put Newlands back in the spotlight. According to the available details, the programme is set to include two major Test matches against Australia and England, as well as a One Day International against Bangladesh. The traditional New Year’s Test is also part of the season.
That upcoming fixture list could make the stadium even more attractive to brands looking for national and international exposure through sport. Megapro chief executive Marc Jury said the season offers companies a strong platform to align with one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting venues. He added that the valuation process is designed to create long-term value for both cricket administrators and future commercial partners.
End of an Era or Smart Business Move?
For many cricket fans, Newlands is more than a stadium name. It is part of Cape Town’s sporting identity. But with the current sponsorship agreement approaching expiry, the WPCA appears to be treating this as a key moment to rethink how the ground is positioned and funded for the future. For now, no new naming partner has been announced.
