Police say a planned gang shooting in Overcome Heights, Muizenberg, was stopped after officers moved in on a tip-off and arrested four suspects on Sunday. Provincial police management said the Crime Prevention Unit attached to Muizenberg SAPS acted on “credible intelligence” about an imminent attack.
Guns, Ammunition and Drugs Seized
SAPS spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said officers “pounced on the address provided” and found the four men with two unlicensed firearms, 33 rounds of ammunition and a bag of cocaine. The suspects were arrested at the scene and the planned shooting was prevented, police said.
Court Appearance Expected
The four men are expected to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court once they have been formally charged. Police have not yet released the suspects’ ages or identities, or confirmed what charges will be added beyond illegal firearm possession and drugs-related offences.
Wider Crackdown on Illegal Firearms
The Muizenberg arrests formed part of a broader weekend focus on removing illegal firearms from communities. In a separate operation, police said members of Operation Shanela II arrested a 71-year-old in Makhaza after allegedly finding a Ruger .44 revolver with four rounds of ammunition during a search of a residence. That suspect is expected in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court.
Police also said Anti-Gang Unit members, acting on information about a hidden firearm at a house in Beacon Valley, chased a suspect into a home and recovered a .457 revolver with 17 rounds of ammunition allegedly concealed under clothes in a wardrobe. The suspect is expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court once charged.
