A 29-year-old man arrested after police uncovered drugs worth an estimated R10 million in a Cape Town apartment has been granted bail.

Gideon Alard was released on R150,000 bail by the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after spending time in custody since his arrest on 19 July 2026.

He faces drug possession and firearm-related charges.

The case has been postponed to 23 October 2026 for further investigation.

Guns, ammunition and drugs seized

Police arrested Alard at premises in De Zicht, Richwood, during a Crime Intelligence operation linked to Bothasig.

According to provincial police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk, officers acted on information that an apartment was allegedly being used as a storage facility by a local gang.

Police said they seized seven 9mm pistols, 17 different magazines and 1,030 rounds of ammunition in different calibres.

A quantity of drugs with an estimated street value of R10 million was also confiscated.

Strict bail conditions imposed

The magistrate granted Alard bail subject to several conditions.

He must report to a police station every day between 8am and 8pm and may not interfere with State witnesses.

His attorney, Bruce Hendricks of Hendricks Harmse Attorneys, welcomed the court’s decision and said the purpose of bail was to ensure an accused person stands trial.

Hendricks also rejected suggestions that his client was connected to a gang.

He told IOL that police had confirmed there was no evidence showing Alard was a gang member.

The defence maintains that Alard is innocent and intends to challenge the State’s case when the matter reaches trial.

The charges against Alard remain allegations and have not been proven in court.
