The Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court postponed the Russian military recruitment case on Tuesday to 29 April 2026.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said investigators still need Financial Intelligence Centre reports on all five accused and mutual legal assistance from Russia.
Nonkululeko Mantula (39), a popular SAFM presenter and freelance SABC journalist, appeared with Xolani Ntuli (47), Thulani Mazibuko (24), Siphamandla Tshabalala (23) and Sifiso Mabena (21). All five deny contravening the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act.
Arrests Followed Airport Tip-off
Police intercepted four of the accused at OR Tambo International Airport in December 2025 as they tried to fly to Russia via the United Arab Emirates. Officers removed them from the boarding gate and handed them to the Hawks.
Thulani Mazibuko was arrested later at his home in Springs. The state alleges Mantula played the central role in facilitating travel and recruitment for Russia’s war in Ukraine.
All five remain free on bail: Mantula on R30 000, Ntuli on R15 000, and the three younger men on R5 000 each.
What Happens Next
This Russian military recruitment case forms part of a wider crackdown on foreign enlistment. South Africa has seen separate allegations against Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, who resigned as an MK Party MP in November 2025 after claims she lured 17 men (some family members) to Russia under false pretences of party training. Authorities have stated the two matters are not linked at this stage.
The Kempton Park matter is expected to return in April once the state completes its evidence gathering.
The NPA confirmed the postponement and reasons. Neither the accused nor their legal teams have issued public statements. The Russian embassy has not commented. The MK Party has not responded to questions about any connection to this specific case.
