Third arrest in Reiger Park investigation
Police have arrested a third suspect in the investigation into the Reiger Park shooting that left two Anti-Gang Unit officers and two women dead.
The Hawks arrested the 27-year-old man on Wednesday. He is expected to make his first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 21 August.
Authorities have not publicly identified him in the source report. He is reportedly related to one of the two suspects already in custody.
The allegations against him have not yet been tested in court.
Two accused remain behind bars
The latest arrest follows the detention of Regan Collis, 23, and Jamal Meyer, 24.
Both men remain in custody and are due back in the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, when they are expected to apply for bail. The State has indicated that it will oppose their release.
Collis faces four counts of murder, attempted murder and charges relating to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The State has also told the court that Collis has other pending criminal matters, including murder and hijacking cases.
Meyer, meanwhile, has no previous convictions, according to evidence presented during his earlier court appearance.
Officers allegedly ambushed
The case stems from a deadly shooting in Reiger Park earlier in August.
Police said the two Anti-Gang Unit officers were part of a crime-prevention team when they heard gunfire and drove towards the disturbance.
Investigators believe the officers were then ambushed and killed. Two women were also killed during the violence.
The deaths triggered a major investigation involving specialised police units.
Stolen rifles recovered
Three days after the officers were killed, Hawks investigators recovered two R5 rifles that had allegedly been stolen from them.
The weapons were found at the Kwadukathole informal settlement in Germiston while police were searching for those believed to be involved in the attack.
Police previously said they believed Collis had not acted alone.
The third arrest adds another accused to the case as investigators continue tracing those they believe may have played a role in the killings.
