Two men, aged 25 and 33, were shot dead in an informal dwelling in Turfburg Walk, Hanover Park, on Wednesday morning. Police said officers were called to the scene at about 5am, where they found both victims with gunshot wounds. One man was declared dead on the scene. The other was rushed to a medical facility in a private vehicle and was declared dead on arrival.
Police Open Murder Cases
Police have opened two murder cases following the shooting. Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said officers responded to the crime scene after the attack and found the victims inside the dwelling. At this stage, no arrests have been made. The suspects fled and remain at large.
Motive Still Under Investigation
Police have not yet confirmed why the men were targeted. Twigg said the motive is now the subject of a South African Police Service investigation. That means investigators are still working to establish who carried out the shooting and what led to the attack. For residents in communities already living with violent crime, that leaves more fear and more unanswered questions.
Shooting Comes Amid Wider Crime Crackdown
The killings happened as the South African National Defence Force has been deployed to crime hotspots in the Western Cape. According to the reported mission plan presented to Parliament, the deployment will run until 31 March next year and includes areas affected by persistent violent crime and gang activity on the outskirts of Cape Town. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the intervention last month, describing organised crime as a major threat to democracy and economic development.
