A teacher at Zeekoevlei Primary School in Lotus River is under investigation after an alleged assault on a learner. Police confirmed the investigation is under way and a case of assault common has been registered at the Grassy Park police station.
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said the case was opened on Monday, 19 January. No arrest has been made at this stage, and the investigation is continuing.
Learner Allegedly Hit with a Duster
According to Gwala, the complaint relates to a 10-year-old boy who was allegedly hit on the back with a duster by a teacher. Police said they are still working to establish the full circumstances around what happened.
While the investigation runs its course, the focus for many parents is simple: kids must be safe at school, full stop. When a classroom becomes a place of fear, learning doesn’t stand a chance.
School Already Under Pressure
The reported incident lands while the school has also been in the spotlight over overcrowding concerns. Parents and education activists recently raised alarms about a Grade 7 Afrikaans class that reportedly had 76 learners.
The Western Cape Education Department previously acknowledged the pressure linked to staffing shortages. It also confirmed that district officials visited the school to deal with class structures and timetabling challenges.
Call for Information
Police are asking anyone with information that could help the investigation to come forward.
For families in the area, this is one of those moments where quick, clear action matters. Accountability builds trust and schools cannot function without it.
