Johannesburg officials have carried out a second operation in Bryanston in just a few days, as the City tightens its response to alleged property hijacking in the area.
Second Bryanston Raid Follows Days After First Operation
Officials raided a home in Bryanston Drive on Monday, after an earlier operation at a nearby property in Grosvenor Road on 8 January. The City’s manager, Floyd Brink, was part of the team on the ground during Monday’s raid.
Suspect Linked to Both Properties
Authorities believe the same man, identified as Lawrence Ramalwa, is linked to the alleged hijacking of both properties. He was arrested during the 8 January operation, according to details published about the case.
Backyard Dwellings Found During Latest Inspection
During Monday’s raid, officials found additional dwellings set up in the garden of the Bryanston Drive property, similar to what was uncovered at the Grosvenor Road site. Authorities also believe the suspect leased out dwellings that had been erected on both properties.
City Frames Arrest as Part of Wider Crackdown
In a media release dated 8 January, the City said the arrest relates to a property that was “illegally occupied” and modified to house numerous people. The City described the operation as multi-disciplinary and linked it to its broader crackdown on hijacked buildings.
