A 61-year-old cyclist was airlifted to hospital after a collision with a taxi on Victoria Road in Camps Bay on Monday morning, 6 April. The crash happened at about 08:30 while a group of around 20 cyclists was travelling from Camps Bay towards Hout Bay.
Police Outline What Happened
According to Camps Bay police station commander Captain Liaan Janse van Rensburg, the taxi was travelling from Hout Bay towards Camps Bay when it overtook another vehicle. He said the driver was not driving recklessly, but one of the cyclists appeared to get a fright, fell in front of the taxi and was then struck. Janse van Rensburg said the cyclist suffered a fractured leg and was flown to hospital for urgent treatment.
Reckless and Negligent Driving Case Opened
Despite the station commander’s account, police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
Reports say the cyclist lost a leg after the collision, while DA MP Ian Cameron said the man was in a critical condition and had undergone multiple surgeries.
Calls for Caution on Victoria Road
Muneeb Hendricks, manager of the Camps Bay Improvement District, said the area was saddened by the incident and urged both drivers and cyclists to use the road with more care. He said motorists should expect cyclists along the coastal route and drive responsibly, while cyclists should follow the rules of the road, remain in the yellow lane and avoid riding side by side.
This latest crash has again put the spotlight on safety along one of Cape Town’s busiest scenic roads, where cyclists and vehicles share a narrow stretch with little room for error.
