A cold front has brought heavy rain to Cape Town, triggering widespread flooding and forcing several road closures across the metro. Motorists face significant delays as water pools on key routes in both the Southern and Northern Suburbs.
Conditions worsened into Monday morning, with rain expected to continue through the day. Cape Town flooding has already affected major arteries and low-lying areas, prompting urgent advice from city officials to plan alternative routes.
Heavy Rain Causes Cape Town Flooding and Travel Chaos
A cold front moved across the Western Cape overnight, delivering steady rainfall and localised flooding. Current temperatures sit at around 16°C with westerly winds and a rising chance of further showers later today.
Several major routes now stand closed or restricted because of water and debris. Chapman’s Peak Drive remains shut due to unsafe conditions, while the N2 inbound off-ramp near Nyanga operates under diversion. In Simon’s Town, Main Road suffers severe flooding with traffic redirected via Soldier’s Way. Glencairn Main Road also has one lane closed.
Flooding Hits Southern and Northern Suburbs
In the Southern Suburbs, Constantia Main Road lies blocked by a fallen tree, and Kalk Bay Main Road reports deep water pooling. Protea Road and Buitenkant Street show flooded intersections.
Northern Suburbs drivers encounter problems on Bottelary Road in Brackenfell, Jip de Jager Drive in Bellville and Frans Conradie Drive in Kraaifontein. Highways and the Cape Flats also suffer: the N1 outbound near Wingfield has lane obstructions, and Sandown Road in Sunningdale plus multiple Parkwood roads remain waterlogged.
City Officials Respond to Cape Town Flooding
The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre has deployed teams to assess damage and manage traffic. Spokesperson Sonica Lategan confirmed localised flooding in low-lying areas and noted that several roads in Parkwood have been affected. Authorities also inspected informal settlements in Nyanga (Mkhonto Square) and Brown’s Farm for structural impacts.
Lategan urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution near waterlogged roads. The centre continues mop-up operations while monitoring the situation as the cold front lingers. No injuries have been reported so far.
