Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of the late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, returned to court for a bail hearing that did not proceed as planned. Officials postponed the matter to 5 March 2026 due to technical glitches and missing documents. This development keeps Mugabe and his co-accused in custody following charges linked to a February shooting incident.
Experts note that such delays highlight procedural challenges in high-profile cases. Meanwhile, questions linger over Mugabe's immigration status in South Africa.
Court Delays Chatunga Mugabe Bail Application
Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and Tobias Mugabe Matonhdze appeared briefly at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on 3 March 2026. A power failure disrupted proceedings, and the state failed to provide key documents to the defence. As a result, the court rescheduled the Chatunga Mugabe bail postponed hearing for 5 March 2026.
Defence lawyer Sinenhlanhla Mnguni addressed reporters outside the court. He explained that the team awaited full facts before proceeding. Mnguni added that consultations with clients continued amid the setback.
Charges Stem from Hyde Park Shooting Incident
Authorities arrested the pair after a shooting at Mugabe's residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, on 19 February 2026. A 23-year-old gardener suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital under police watch, according to police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi. The incident led to charges of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, plus defeating the ends of justice.
Additional allegations against Mugabe include theft and unlawful presence in South Africa. However, the state has not formally confirmed these yet. Reports indicate police seized a BMW with sirens and lights during the investigation, enhancing context from the scene.
Defence Addresses Immigration and Health Concerns
Mnguni declined to detail Mugabe's psychological state after a week in custody. He observed no drastic changes but emphasized his role focused on legal matters. On immigration issues, the lawyer stated the team awaited clarity to guide strategy.
