An Elsies River couple shooting has left two people dead after gunmen opened fire inside a wendy house in Avonwood during the early hours of Wednesday, 15 April 2026. Police said a 26-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man were found with multiple gunshot wounds at about 04:15.

The shooting has renewed concern about safety in Elsies River, where community leaders and previous reports have described persistent gang-related violence. According to local leaders, the couple were not involved in gangs and left behind three children.

Police open murder cases after Avonwood attack

The Elsies River couple shooting happened in Avonwood, behind Queenswood Court, in the early hours of Wednesday. According to Daily Voice, unknown gunmen entered the property and fired multiple shots at the couple while they were inside their home.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said Elsies River police responded to the scene at about 04:15 on 15 April 2026. Officers found the bodies of a 26-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. Two murder cases were registered, and the motive remains under investigation. No arrest had been made at the time of publication, according to police.

Ward councillor Christopher Jordaan said the victims were believed to be innocent residents and not gang members. He condemned the attack and said rival gangs were fighting over territory in the area, making parts of the neighbourhood dangerous even for maintenance teams.

That warning matches other recent reporting on crime in Elsies River. In February 2025, Daily Voice described the area as a “war zone” after multiple shootings, while Cape Argus reported another suspected gang-related fatal shooting in March 2026. SABC News has also documented fear among residents and continued police anti-gang operations in Elsies River and surrounding Cape Flats communities.

Responses and calls for safety

Jordaan urged residents not to spread unverified claims on social media, saying such posts could deepen the trauma for relatives and children in the community. He also appealed to families to keep children indoors during shootings, warning that some children run toward the scene after gunfire.

Police have not publicly announced a motive in the Elsies River couple shooting. However, the killing comes amid repeated warnings from residents, activists and news reports that gang violence in Elsies River continues to place civilians at risk.
