Frustration boiled over in Elsies River this week after parts of the community were left without electricity for days. Residents in Eureka Estate, Clarke Estate, Uitsig and Leonsdale took to Owen Road on Tuesday and Wednesday, burning tyres as anger mounted over the prolonged outages. According to Cape Argus, some areas have been without power since last week.

The protests reflect more than just inconvenience. For many families, the outage has disrupted daily life in the cold and deepened fears among vulnerable residents, including babies and pensioners. Community members say repeated complaints have brought little relief.

Community leaders say Eskom is failing residents

Ward councillor for Eureka Estate Charles Esau told Cape Argus that the community had logged multiple complaints, but Eskom had not responded effectively. He said residents had been left without proper service delivery despite constant follow-ups. He also stressed that winter conditions were making the situation even harder for elderly people in the area.

Esau said the problem could not simply be blamed on bad weather. According to him, electricity in the area sometimes stays off for a week even when conditions are good. That has fuelled a growing sense that the community is being ignored.

Families say the crisis is personal

A Matroosfontein resident identified only as Alzayne said his electricity had been off since Friday morning. He told the paper he has an eight-month-old baby at home as well as elderly parents who depend on stable power. He said Eskom staff were working nearby, but had not yet come to assist his household.

Clarke Estate community leader Johannes Weilbacht described the outages as part of an ongoing pattern. He said residents often struggle to get clear answers and that Eskom takes too long to fix faults. He added that power sometimes returns briefly after protests, only for outages to happen again weeks or months later.

Eskom silent as anger grows

Weilbacht said some residents saw their power restored on Tuesday night and again on Wednesday morning, but not everyone was reconnected. That uneven recovery has added to community anger and uncertainty over when full service will return.

By the time the article was published, Eskom had not responded to questions from Cape Argus. That silence is likely to deepen frustration in Elsies River, where residents say they are tired of living through repeated outages with no clear answers and no reliable timeline for repair.
