Four people have been shot dead in Nyanga, Cape Town, in what police suspect is the latest taxi-related attack in the area.
The shooting happened just after 8 am on Tuesday at the corner of Moonwood Drive and Sheffield Road.
Police said unknown gunmen opened fire on a group of men, killing four people and leaving two others critically wounded.
The incident has again placed Nyanga’s ongoing taxi violence under the spotlight, after several taxi owners and drivers were killed in recent months.
Police launch manhunt
Police spokesperson Andre Traut said detectives have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
He said investigators were following up on all available leads to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
“Detectives are following up on all leads to identify and arrest those responsible,” Traut said.
He added that additional police resources had been deployed to the area following the shooting.
The identities of the victims had not been released in the information provided.
Attack linked to taxi violence
Police suspect the shooting may be linked to taxi violence in Nyanga.
The area has seen a string of deadly incidents involving taxi owners and drivers in recent months.
The latest attack adds to growing concern over safety in communities affected by taxi-related conflict.
Taxi violence has often left ordinary residents caught in the middle, especially when shootings happen in public spaces during busy morning hours.
Tuesday’s shooting happened shortly after 8 am, a time when many people are usually travelling to work, school or nearby businesses.
Public urged to help
Police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
Traut urged witnesses, or anyone who may know something about the shooting, to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
Information can also be shared anonymously through the MySAPS mobile application.
Police said detectives are continuing their investigation and are working to track down the gunmen.
The attack comes as communities in parts of Cape Town continue to demand stronger action against violent crime and organised attacks linked to the taxi industry.
