Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has officially announced he is standing to become the next national leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA). He confirmed the decision on Friday and said he is running to succeed outgoing party leader John Steenhuisen.
Hill-Lewis made his announcement in Elsies River as the DA opened nominations for its top leadership positions ahead of the party’s federal congress in April, where delegates will elect a new leader.
Why the Leadership Contest is Happening Now
Steenhuisen has indicated he will not stand for re-election. He currently serves as agriculture minister in the Government of National Unity (GNU), with the DA as the second-largest party in the GNU after the ANC.
Hill-Lewis has been Cape Town’s mayor since 2021. Before that, he served as an MP and worked as chief of staff to former DA leader Mmusi Maimane.
Endorsements Roll in at the Launch
It is reported that Tshwane mayoral candidate Cilliers Brink endorsed Hill-Lewis, saying he had taken “difficult decisions” in defence of the rule of law despite political pressure. Brink said Hill-Lewis brought “intellect, competence” and experience of government, and could unite a diverse party around shared values.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube also backed Hill-Lewis, saying the DA entered government “to rescue the country”. She told supporters she believed in his ability to lead the party.
What Hill-Lewis Says he will Focus on
In his remarks, Hill-Lewis said he felt “a sense of responsibility” and spoke about hope for South Africa’s future. He said politics should be guided by tolerance, generosity of spirit, and a commitment to the rule of law.
He pointed to the DA’s governance record in Cape Town, including infrastructure investment, affordable housing efforts, and job growth figures he cited for the city. He also thanked Steenhuisen and said the party was stronger because of his service.
