EFF leader Julius Malema has doubled down on his political future, saying he will remain active even if he is removed from Parliament.
Gun Law Conviction Puts Seat at Risk
Malema is awaiting sentencing at the East London Magistrate’s Court after he was found guilty of contravening several gun laws linked to the EFF’s 2018 anniversary celebrations. The case relates to him firing shots into the air during the event.
Under South African law, a sentence of more than 12 months’ imprisonment would mean Malema loses his seat as an MP.
‘Once I Appeal, the Sentence is Suspended’
Speaking to supporters at an EFF gathering in Boksburg over the weekend, Malema said he plans to appeal both his conviction and sentence. He told supporters this should ease their fears because an appeal would suspend the sentence while the legal process continues.
He also said that, during that period, he would continue with his parliamentary duties, including roles linked to the ethics committee and the Judicial Services Commission.
‘They Can Take Their Parliament’
Malema claimed there is a plan to remove him from Parliament, but insisted that even if that happens, he will continue political work from the EFF’s Winnie Madikizela-Mandela House, which he described as the “people’s parliament”.
He framed the situation as part of a broader struggle, saying, “No one will remove me from the revolution.”
Malema is expected back at the East London Magistrate’s Court in April.
