South African bakkie fans have another Hilux to watch. Toyota South Africa’s next Hilux GR-Sport is expected to arrive in 2027, adding a new flagship to the ninth-generation range.

Toyota South Africa Motors president and CEO Andrew Kirby confirmed the timing during an interview with Cars.co.za at SA Auto Week in Durban. An exact launch date has not been announced.

What has been confirmed?

The upcoming model will bring the GR-Sport badge to the latest Hilux generation. However, its engine specifications, pricing and final design remain unconfirmed.

That leaves buyers waiting for the full reveal before comparing the newcomer with other double-cab options.

The current Hilux has already changed

Toyota introduced the new-generation Hilux locally in June 2026. Its changes extend beyond the exterior, with a redesigned cabin and updates to comfort, connectivity and driver assistance.

According to Toyota, engineers revised the suspension, damping, and steering to improve refinement and on-gravel behaviour. Electric power steering also forms part of the update.

Higher-grade versions feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument display alongside a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. Selected grades receive Toyota Safety Sense 3, while Smart Entry-equipped models introduce Ultra Wide Band technology intended to improve resistance to relay theft attacks.

Equipment varies by derivative, making it useful to compare individual models before choosing a bakkie.

Toyota heads into its next chapter

The announcement comes after Toyota South Africa Motors recorded its strongest sales month yet in September 2026.

The company reported 15,366 vehicle sales and a 24.9% share of the domestic market. Hilux contributed 3,769 sales, retaining its segment lead.

Passenger models also contributed to the result. The locally manufactured Corolla Cross recorded 1,964 sales, while the Starlet added 1,573.
