The Piquetberg Mall in the Swartland town of Piquetberg, Western Cape, is undergoing a landmark R150 million expansion, the largest retail investment in the town’s history. The project has entered its third and final stage and, upon completion later this year, will double the mall’s gross lettable area to 13,000 square metres.

Owned by the Jankielsohn family, who also operate the Boland SUPERSPAR, the redevelopment will introduce over 40 stores, more than 400 parking spaces—including 86 underground—two elevators, an escalator, and improved pedestrian access from Long Street. The upgrades also feature a food court with diverse cuisines, modern ablutions, and a mix of national and local tenants such as PET STOREY and Vida e Caffè.

Dean Jankielsohn highlighted the family’s vision for the project: “We wanted the mall to reflect Piquetberg’s character and mountain setting, using natural light, warm materials, and comfortable outdoor spaces to create a village within a village.” The expansion aims to encourage foot traffic, support local businesses, and ensure the town’s commercial sustainability.

With a population of just over 12,000 and located less than two hours from Cape Town, Piquetberg is the commercial and agricultural hub of the Swartland district. The family’s investment counters trends of deurbanisation and declining town centres, focusing on retaining Piquetberg’s vitality.

Engineering and design challenges posed by the town’s mountain slopes were addressed by KLS Consulting Engineers, By Design, and GASS Architecture Studios. Barend Oosthuizen of By Design said the mall will offer “an exceptional mix of tenants, a food court catering to varied tastes, and the magnificent Piketberg mountains as its backdrop,” positioning it as a premier destination for locals and travellers alike.
