Two young rugby players from a Wellington club remain in custody after a female student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s Wellington campus was allegedly raped in a vehicle.

Police confirmed that two men, aged 23 and 28, were arrested on Monday. They appeared in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on rape charges, and the case was postponed for a formal bail application.

Police Confirm Rugby Players Rape Case Arrests

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, the two men remain in custody while the case continues. The court postponed the matter until Monday for a formal bail application.

The alleged incident reportedly happened in the early hours of last Sunday after a party. The complainant is a female student at CPUT’s Wellington campus, according to the source report.

One of the accused, a 23-year-old rugby player, was reportedly due to play his final match for his Wellington club on Saturday, 2 May, before moving to a semi-professional club in Limpopo. Instead, he is being held at Allandale Prison.

The second accused, aged 28, is described as the player’s clubmate. The source report alleges that he drove the vehicle in which the alleged crime took place.

Club Says Law Must Take Its Course

The rugby club’s chairman confirmed that the club knows two of its players were arrested for rape. However, he referred further questions to their legal representative.

“We respect the law, and the law must take its course,”

the chairman said.

Elton Rochert of Rochert Attorneys confirmed that he represents both accused men. He said he visited them in custody on Thursday to consult with them and added that they would apply for bail on Monday.

The names of the accused have been withheld because of the nature of the charge. Under South African criminal procedure rules, their names may only be released once they have pleaded.

CPUT Campus Context and Next Steps

CPUT’s official website lists Wellington as one of its campuses. The campus offers programmes in the Faculties of Applied Sciences and Business and Management Sciences, and it is one of the university’s campuses where students can study Education.

The matter will return to the Wellington Magistrate’s Court for the formal bail application. Until then, both accused remain in custody.
