Sea Point residents, businesses and visitors have been warned to expect possible disruption as March and March prepares to hold a protest in the area on Tuesday, 16 June 2026.
The march is scheduled to run from 9 am to 3 pm.
Organisers are expected to protest against the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in the area.
The gathering has been granted an approved permit, allowing demonstrators to march legally and peacefully.
The issue has sparked concern among some residents and business owners, especially as debates around immigration and public safety continue across the country.
Route and traffic warning
The march is expected to begin on Beach Road near Fort Road.
Demonstrators are then expected to move along Beach Road, turn left into St John’s Road and return via Main Road.
The procession is expected to end at the Mandela Glasses on Glengariff Road.
The Sea Point Community Improvement District said it would keep operational resources along the planned route during the event.
Residents and passers-by have been advised to be cautious and prepare for possible traffic delays.
Businesses in the area have also been reminded that trading during the protest is at their discretion.
Those with outdoor seating may be affected by crowds moving through the area.
Councillor explains legal position
Ward councillor Nicola Jowell said she understood the range of concerns raised by residents ahead of the march.
She said it was important to explain the legal position around protests and public gatherings.
“It is essential to clarify the legal position regarding gatherings and marches,” Jowell said.
She said a Constitutional Court ruling had established that gatherings could not be banned only because they lacked a permit.
“The right to assemble and protest is enshrined in our Constitution, and it applies to all gatherings, regardless of their cause or message,” Jowell said.
SAPS to manage event
Jowell said she understood residents’ anxiety about both the disruption and the message behind the march.
She said she had been in contact with the City’s Safety and Security Directorate.
She reassured residents that SAPS would hold command and operational control during the protest.
City safety services are expected to support police if needed.
Authorities have urged residents, motorists and businesses to plan around the march and stay alert along the route.
