South Africa has lost one of its most treasured cultural figures. Soli Philander, the celebrated comedian, actor, playwright and broadcaster, passed away at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer.
Born in Elsies River, Cape Town, Philander rose from humble beginnings to become a defining voice in South African entertainment. His storytelling carried the unmistakable rhythm of the Cape Flats, blending humour with sharp social insight and an unshakable sense of humanity.
Philander’s career spanned theatre, television, film and radio. He graced respected stages such as the Baxter Theatre Centre and built a loyal national audience as host of Liriekeraai and the South African edition of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?. Many also remember him fondly for his role as Timothy Traddle on the children’s programme Kideo.

Beyond the spotlight, Philander was deeply committed to community upliftment. He supported youth development initiatives across the Western Cape and lent his voice to campaigns promoting inclusion and dignity. Importantly, he was also a visible and vocal ally within the queer community, using his platform to advocate for acceptance and equal treatment. Through appearances at LGBTQIA+ events, mentorship of emerging queer creatives, and public support for diversity in the arts, Philander helped create safer, more affirming spaces within the entertainment industry.
In recognition of his immense contribution to comedy, he received the Savanna Comics’ Choice Lifetime Achievement Award, cementing his status as both pioneer and mentor.
Philander leaves behind five children and a legacy woven into the fabric of South African culture. His laughter filled theatres, but his compassion filled rooms. Both will be remembered.
