Businessman Suliman Carrim will remain in custody while his bail proceedings continue in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

According to TimesLIVE, Carrim was remanded in custody as the State continues verifying residential addresses linked to him.

He faces a charge relating to his alleged failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Arrest Followed Commission Dispute

Carrim was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after previously failing to return to the commission.

The Department of Justice confirms that the Madlanga Commission was established to investigate criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

The commission’s proceedings previously recorded that Carrim had been required to return to give evidence but did not appear.

TimesLIVE reports that he was arrested shortly before leaving South Africa on an international flight.

Bail Proceedings Continue

Carrim spent the weekend in custody before returning to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

According to TimesLIVE, the State raised concerns about his travel plans during the bail proceedings.

His legal representatives disputed suggestions that he intended to leave the country permanently.

Carrim has not been convicted of the charge, and the matter remains before court.

Commission Probes Criminal Justice System

The Presidency says the Madlanga Commission’s mandate covers allegations of criminal infiltration, political interference and corruption involving law-enforcement and criminal justice institutions.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously praised law-enforcement agencies for following up on evidence emerging from the commission’s work.

The Presidency also confirmed that the commission has submitted interim reports containing recommendations and referrals based on evidence heard during its proceedings.

Carrim’s current case relates specifically to his alleged failure to comply with the commission process.

According to TimesLIVE, he will remain behind bars until the next stage of his bail hearing.
