Police have arrested a suspect allegedly found in possession of an item belonging to murdered Kempton Park runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the arrest on Monday, 12 October 2026, as investigations into the 38-year-old woman's death continue.

According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court.

However, police have emphasised that the individual has not been charged with Moselakgomo's murder.

Suspect Faces Possible Stolen Property Charge

SABC News reported that the suspect was arrested after police discovered an item belonging to Moselakgomo in their possession.

Mathe confirmed that the individual is likely to face a charge relating to possession of stolen property.

She stressed that investigators have not established sufficient grounds to bring murder charges against the suspect.

Police have not disclosed what property was recovered or explained how the item was allegedly obtained.

The investigation into Moselakgomo's killing remains ongoing.

Runner Found Dead After Disappearing

Moselakgomo disappeared in September after leaving her home in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park, for an afternoon run.

According to Sowetan, she had left her eight-year-old daughter at home before going out.

Her disappearance prompted a search before her body was discovered in the Kempton Park area.

On 14 September, SAPS confirmed that her family had formally identified her body at the Germiston mortuary.

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane subsequently expressed condolences to Moselakgomo's family and pledged to pursue those responsible.

Police Investigate Deaths of Women

Moselakgomo's death drew national attention amid investigations into several women found dead across Ekurhuleni.

The cases sparked public concern about women's safety and the possibility that some of the killings could be connected.

During a national address in September, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research was assisting investigators with digital forensic work.

However, police had not established evidence linking the killings to a single perpetrator.

The latest arrest represents a development in Moselakgomo's case, but authorities have cautioned that it does not establish involvement in her murder.

Police have confirmed that investigations are continuing.
